Valentine’s Day is a time to cherish all your sweethearts–even the littlest ones. Skip the boxed chocolates this year and head into the kitchen with the kids for some homemade sweet treats. Shower them with love starting with breakfast. Place greased metal heart-shaped cookie cutters on a griddle or skillet. Pour in pancake batter and watch their faces light up with every bite. Or have them help make these Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes with creamy frosting and a peanut butter filling.

A few tips for baking with kids:

  • Keep it clean. Teach your kids the importance of washing their hands before handling or preparing food.
  • Don’t sweat the mess. Kids are as messy in the kitchen as they are in real life. Go with the flow and keep it fun-there’ll be plenty of time to clean afterwards.
  • Play it safe. Let kids watch at the sidelines when taking hot trays out of the oven, and remind them the pans remain hot for a while, so no taste-testing cakes and cookies before they’ve cooled.
