Cookie Basics

Time spent in the kitchen with your kids is always time well spent, and baking cookies is an easy starting point. After all, cookies are fun to bake, fun to eat and fun to share. Here are six baking basics that everyone’s cookie repertoire should include, plus a few recipes to practice on with young ones:

  1. Drop: Perhaps the most popular, drop cookies are formed by placing spoonfuls of dough on a cookie sheet prior to baking.
  2. Molded: Formed with your hands or in specially made molds, molded cookies can be in balls, cylinders or other simple shapes.
  3. Rolled: Dough is rolled out with a rolling pin and then cookie cutters are used to shape the cookies.
  4. Pressed: These cookies are formed using either a pastry bag or a cookie press. A pastry bag maybe a bit tough for kids to handle, but they will love pushing the button on a press and watching the small uniformly shaped cookies hit the pan.
  5. Bar: Unlike the other methods, bar cookies are baked by spreading dough or batter in a shallow pan and cut into individual pieces after baking.
  6. Refrigerated (icebox): Before baking, dough is rolled in a cylinder shape and refrigerated until firm enough to slice.
