Pregnancy is a life-changing time for a couple. While admittedly most of the books out there are for the mother, dads are also trying to understand the process and determine what they can be doing during this special time. Here are six titles to get informed, laugh, and feel useful.
1. What to Expect When You’re Expecting by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel. This hallmark for women is also a good source of information for men on what is happening on a week-by-week basis including the development of the fetus and biological changes in the mother such as likelihood of morning sickness or incontinence.
2. The Birth Partner, 3rd edition by Penny Simkin. This book outlines what will happen in the delivery room and the specific role that a dad can play. It explains the different types of birthing options and the medical technology and terminology, all of which is useful for making informed decisions.
3. Dude, You’re Gonna Be a Dad!: How to Get (Both of You) Through the Next 9 Months by John Pfeiffer. This accessible and modern book covers everything from conception to breastfeeding and what can be done from the male perspective during pregnancy.
4. The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads-to-Be by Armin A. Brott and Jennifer Ash. This book focuses on understanding and making sense of all the emotions and changes that a father goes through during his partner’s pregnancy. It is broken down into nine chapters for a month-by-month coverage of things for men to consider such as telling the grandparents and setting up budgets.
5. Dad’s Guide to Pregnancy for Dummies by Matthew M. Miller and Sharon Perkins. This simple but approachable book explains the ways to support the pregnant partner while also taking on tasks to plan for the new addition. It also includes a section on how to deal with possible complications at the birth or afterwards.

6. Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads by Gary Greenberg and Jeannie Hayden. For after the little one’s arrival, this humorous take on caring for a child provides instruction for the first year from bottles to staying in a hotel. Drawings bring a lighthearted look to useful information.
